The objective of the Radiation Safety Program is to assure that any work
with radioactive materials is conducted in a safe manner, minimizing any potential
radiation exposures to personnel, and the public. Maintaining compliance with
regulatory requirements is an effective tool in achieving this objective.

The Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) is appointed by the Vice President for Research; the Committee establishes policy, reviews operating performance data, and determines corrective actions, as needed. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) provides specific regulations governing the constituency and function of the RSC. The RSC meets periodically to review the performance of the DFCI Radiation Safety Program, and conduct its business as required by DPH regulations. To submit an issue for consideration by the RSC, contact the Radiation Safety Office. (The responsibilities of the DFCI RSC are described in the Radiation Safety Manual; refer to Appendix I for a listing of the current members.)
|
|
|
The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) is a member of the RSC, subject to approval by the Department of Public Health. The RSO acts to implement the policies and directives established by the RSC, and collects operating performance data for review by the RSC. The RSO also oversees user training, dosimetry, radioactive materials procurement, receipt, shipping, and waste management programs.

Permit
Holders are qualified DFCI staff or
tenant (independent) investigators who have been delegated authority
and responsibility for management and oversight of radioactive materials'
use. Their DFCI Permits (authorized by the RSC) specify limits for possession
of isotopes, and
identify locations for their use. The Permit Holder is directly responsible for the safe conduct of any activities involving radioactive materials in his/her labs or facilities, or by personnel operating under his/her Permit.
