Backups

We have two primary methods for backing up data.
For server-sized machines, including those in the Dana-Farber Data Center we use Legato Networker. For this purpose, DFCI Research Computing maintains two tape libraries, each of which hold 126 500-Gb data tape cartiridges. (In compressed format, that's about 95 Terabytes per library.) Legato Networker allows us to restore files easily to our file servers and lets administrators of individual servers to sefl-restore data. Networker backups normally are run on a daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly (full-backup) schedule. Owners of servers can be notified by email when a backup completes. There are occasions where a backup won't complete for one or more days. DFCI Research Computing will post information on its web site if there are backup problems.

We also run Retrospect Remote for backing up individual Macs. Retrospect uses 3 data libraries for storage. Restrospect doesn't backup all directories on Macs.
