Bone Marrow Failure Repository at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Children's Hospital, Boston

Tissue samples from patients with bone marrow failure syndromes or from their family members have proven again and again to be critical for productive scientific research. Dr. D'Andrea's laboratory has generated a repository and patient database to investigate the molecular causes of these disorders with the goal of improving diagnosis and treatment of these disorders. The procedure outlined below will allow for the efficient establishment and transport of more of these critical materials for our research programs.

More recently, we have become interested in collecting tumor samples (fresh surgical biopsies of cancers or leukemia) from bone marrow failure patients or family members who develop cancer. These tumor and leukemia samples will be critical to our understanding of the process by which normal human cells transform into tumor cells. Understanding these processes may lead to more rational diagnostic procedures and drug treatments of such patients with cancer.

Blood Sample Collection and Bone Marrow Collection:

Prior to sending samples, please contact Dr. D'Andrea (see contact information below) so that the laboratory is ready to receive them. It is best to send samples on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. Your physician should collect two 10cc tubes of blood or bone marrow drawn in a sodium heparin (not lithium heparin!!); this can be done while you are undergoing other blood work for diagnostic or treatment reasons. The samples need to be sent at room temperature (not refrigerated!!) via overnight Federal Express to our address (see below). The cost of shipping will be paid by our office. The samples cannot be processed without a signed consent. The consent form documents are available by contacting Lisa Moreau at 617.632.5792. Please send us the signed consent form together with the samples.

Tumor and Leukemia Collection:

We are extremely interested in obtaining fresh samples of tumors or fresh leukemic bone marrows from patients who develop cancer. The samples cannot be processed without a signed consent. The consent form documents are available by contacting Lisa Moreau at 617.632.5792. Please send us the signed consent form together with the samples. Because of the special care required for preparing and transporting these samples, please contact Dr. Alan D'Andrea directly as indicated below. We would be happy to discuss appropriate procedures directly with your physician or surgeon.

Prior to sending samples, please contact either Dr. Alan D'Andrea or Lisa Moreau see contact information below:
